How Safe is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide is a drug recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It is used for treating adults with chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes. Plus, it also helps obese people cut down on excess body fat.

But people often ask the question: “How effective is semaglutide and is it safe to use?”

If you want answers, you have come to the right place; our expert dieticians and nurse practitioners at SlimCare Medical are here to give you the best advice.

Proof from Recent Tests and Trials

These tests covered both areas of type 2 diabetes and obesity. Let us explain in brief how they took place.

Effectiveness for weight loss

Semaglutide ran tests with patients to study whether it was effective in managing body weight. More than 2000 participants took part in this study which lasted for 65 weeks.

Out of these people, one group received the semaglutide injection once a week. On the other hand, the second group was placed under a placebo. So, here’s how it ended.

The patients who received the semaglutide medication lost approximately 33 pounds of body fat. But the placebo group lost only 5.6 pounds.

Effectiveness for type 2 diabetes

PIONEER ran ten separate trials to find out the impact of semaglutide in patients with type 2 diabetes. Let’s look at the results obtained from PIONEER-1.

In this examination, 703 subjects took part. One group received a daily dose of oral semaglutide in 3mg, 7mg, and 14mg. Meanwhile, another group received a placebo treatment.

The haemoglobin levels (HbA1c) in the first group were better than the other group. Furthermore, the semaglutide group also lost more weight than the other group. Nausea and diarrhoea were common side effects observed.

Therefore, all these studies shine a light on the advantage of semaglutide. The outcome is more significant compared to other similar drugs used for the same application.

What should you know before taking a semaglutide medication?

You should know that semaglutide also has many side effects. And there are several precautions to using this drug. Plus, it is not for everyone. So what are the risks involved? Let’s find out.

The only exception is that there is no guarantee that the benefits are greater than the risks.

Nevertheless, healthcare professionals suggest not using it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. But if you still get pregnant, it is advised to use contraception to avoid risks.
